Abstract
Umbilical vessel catheterization has become a common procedure in critically ill newborn infants. We studied clinical application, technical problems and complications of umbilical vessel catheterization in 340 of 1,396 newborn babies who
admitted
at
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Children's Hospital, Seoul, Korea from January 1989 to December 1993. We hope that this study is dedicated to expansion of clinical application in
umbilical
vessel catheterization Korea.
340 patients who were umbilical vessel catheterized from January 1989 to December 1993 at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Children's hospital were enrolled in this study.
1) There were 515 cases of umbilical vessel catheterization during the 5 years period.
2) The proportion of catheterized patients among admitted patients had increasing tendency yearly.
3) The proportion of catheterized patients in admitted patients had increasing tendency as gestational period was shorter, and birth weight was smaller.
4) Respiratory distress syndrome(RDS) was the highest associated disease in umbilical vessel catheterized patients.
5) 21.4% of umbilical artery catheter and 32.6% of umbilical vein catheter were positioned inappropriately.
6) Bacterial colonization of catheter tip was the most common complication of umbilical vessel catheterization.
7) Catheter tip culture was positive in 36.6% of umbilical artery and 33.9% of umbilical vein catheterization.
